Project Description
Design and construction of interior commercial spaces for local merchants in the Sawmill District’s urban market.

Formative Architecture

Individual merchants located within Sawmill Market revive an historic neighborhood, offering an eclectic mix of eateries and local small businesses.

Sawmill Market houses nearly 30 local merchants to create New Mexico’s first artisan food hall.

Formative works with many individual tenants and Sawmill Market to create unique, counter service restaurants.

Each design features distinct branding while adhering to the contemporary and cultural vibe of the development.

The Sawmill Micro Tenants. The Sawmill Market Micro-Tenants are a series of smaller booths located at the heart of the overall floor plan.

Because the original design was not developed with particular tenants in mind, Formative incorporated concepts and finishes that could translate to any occupant.

Dr. Field Goods. A cornerstone of Sawmill Market from day one, Dr. Field Goods offers on-site dining and butcher shop provisions.

The design aims to be clean and modern with a “rough-around-the-edges” feel.

XO Waffle. This light hearted design is a direct evocation of the light and fluffy Leige waffles being served by XO Waffle.

To tie the design and branding together, Formative worked in conjunction with the logo designers to bring the playful nature of this business to life.

Hiro Sushi. Although the smallest tenant in the collection of artisan booths at Sawmill Market, Hiro Sushi is one of the most efficient and well designed.

Only 100 square feet in size, it packs a creative punch.

The Japanese-inspired design includes Shou Sugi Ban (charred) wood siding, delicate wood joinery, shoji slider screens, and clean lines.

Awards

  • AIA Albuquerque, Merit Award, Small Architectural Project 2023

Red & Green. What is a New Mexico food hall without high quality New Mexican food?

Red & Green features an aesthetic that celebrates “La Cocina” — the culinary history of our state passed down through the generations, and the feel of the authentic New Mexican kitchen.

Rush of Prana. A standout among the other Sawmill restaurants, Rush of Prana is a bright and playful destination offering smoothies and health foods.

The design incorporates a custom mural from local artist Ingrid Mahler.

Formative pulls the colorful, light palette throughout the space while still being true to the overall, high quality design aesthetic of Sawmill Market.

Located in Albuquerque's historic Sawmill District, Sawmill Market is an artisanal food hall that celebrates both culinary traditions and emerging trends.
